. Brick and marble in the middle ages: notes of tours in the north of Italy . other church at (I think)Vilters, close to Eagatz, which has a lofty tower finished oneach side with a sharp gable, and athin octagonal spire rising from theintersection of the cross-gabled roof;both these steeples are in a positionwhich for some reason is very popularin this district—the south side of thechancel. From Eagatz to Chur the churchesare all very similar; they have talltowers generally in the same positionas those near Eagatz, and capped withbull)ous roofs, or sharp spires coveredwith metal. The road is not quitethe most agreeable we have travelled;some of the views, it is true, are mostlovely, and the mountains — amongwhich towers pre-eminent the grandoutline of the Falkniss — are verynoble; but, despite all this, the valleyis too wide, and the Ehine, by periodicalinundations, manages to secure sonearly its whole extent to itself, that there is a waste, desolate, and pestilential look in the foreground which isnot prepossessing. We arrived at Chwv at about lialC-past.
