This 1866 engraving shows the defense line constructed by Confederate General Weitzel near Petersburg, Pennsylvania.

This 1866 engraving shows the defense line constructed by Confederate General Weitzel. First, there was a strong line of earthworks, consisting of redoubts and entrenchments, with embrasures made more efficient by bags of sand. Outside this was a ditch, with abatis in front, and outside of all a row of pointed palisades of timber, inclining toward the approaches of Union troops. This line of defenses was at Bermuda Hundred, near Perersburg, Virginia, in June 1864.
