The eyes arelarge and the ears erect; the limbs subequal; the tarsi short, andthe tail is either short, rudimentary or wanting altogether. Thethird upper premolar is smaller than the first and possesses one largeexternal cusp, and the last upper molar varies in the number of itscusps in the different genera, being quadricusped in Loris, tricuspedin Nycticebus and Arctocebus, and bicusped in LORIS ,i. -IS 11) :;l,:,. The slender Loris from Ceylon was here first described asLemur tardigradus; and this nomenclature was followed byErxleben, Gmelin, and Schreber. 1784. Boddccrt, Elenchus Animalitim. The genus Tardigradus was here instituted for the LemurTARDIGRADUS Linn., but being preoccupied by Brisson inBradipodidce could not be again employed. 1796. E. Geoffrey Saint-Hilaire, in Magasin Encyclopedique. The Linnasan species Lemur tardigr.\dus was here renamedLemur gracilis, and Loris established as the generic name. 1804. Fischer-de-Waldheim (G).
