In the same year he was appointedtrustee of the Throop Polytechnic Institute, ofPasadena, Cal., and two years later received theappointment to the position of medical examinerby the State Commission ni Lunacy. On a trip throughthe San Jacinto mountains he came upon thisjjlateau or valley, covered with magnificent pines,and situated at an altitude of fifty-two hundredand fifty feet. Struck with the beauty of the lo-cation as well as its desirability as a health re-sort, he was instrumental in the organization ofthe above-named company, with a capital stockof $250,000.
