Wave energy generators, artwork. The details of the generator shown here, designed by researchers at the Oregon State University, USA, were published in 2005. A city at upper right is shown as the recipient of the power generated several kilometres offshore. The basic unit is a high permanent magnet linear generator buoy (inset at right) that converts the movement of the waves into energy. Voltage is induced when waves cause coils located inside the buoy to move relative to the magnetic field of the shaft anchored to the seabed 30 metres below. 200 such buoys could power a city centre.
