Fancy Stripe Combinations.—Designs of this classfor worsted trouserings, cotton textures, and tweedmantlings, are frequently very intricate in both weave andcolour composition. Indeed it follows as a naturalsequence that if a striped design is richly diversified inweave arrangement, it will be correspondingly complex incolouring. Probably a greater degree of art knowledgeand weaving ingenuity is requisite in the origination ofthis type of woven design than of any other description of. textile effect. Not only in a weave, but in a textural andcolour relation, is there extreme intricacy of technical con-trivance in these fabrics. First, a uniform texture isindispensable; second, this quality must be obtained in con-junction with elegant and novel weave effects ; and, third, the arrangement of colouring adopted must be harmoniousin shading and in accordance with the structure of theweaves combined. 175.
