The Rev. J. S. Lys was appointedMinister, and paid 60/. per annum, by an assessment on thepews. This gentleman having removed to Alderney, in 1824,the Rev. Aicholas ^Yalters was ordained on Bethel Chapel, andperformed the duty for some time, conjointly with the L. Davies, Yice-Principal of Elizabeth College, whonow solely performs the duty here. Both senices are now inEnglish. The collections for the poor at this chapel amountto about 5/. per annum. 138 GUERNSEY. ST. JAMESS Ihe necessity of erecting another place of public worship,according to the rites of the established church, for the accom-modation of the English residents in the island, having beenlong generally felt, a number of gentlemen met Admiral SirJames Saumarez, at Square-house, September the 20th. andagain on the 22d, 1815. The reasons there advanced weredeemed cogent enough to induce the gentlemen then presentto call a general meeting, Avhich took place at Coles hotel, the3d of October, 1815, under the patronage of Sir J. Saumarez,who became their President; a gentleman whose public as ST. J AMES S CHURCH. 139 well as private character reflects honour on this island, whichgave him birth. At this meeting;, a committee was formed,which, after combating; many difficulties, happily succeededin laying the first stone of this church
