Better than Premier in Five Important Ways Empire berries are much better in quality than Premier. Empire berries average larger in size than Premier. Empire berries are much more attractive and on any market where quality and ap- pearance count will bring a higher price than Premier. Empire berries are fully as firm as Premier, with a tougher skin which makes them hold and ship better. Empire plants are more vigorous growers than most Premier stocks. Even though certified virus free stocks of Empire are not yet available the stocks we have grow just as well as virus free Premier and our se- lected stocks of regular Premier. Empire plants are very productive, many find them fully equal to Premier. Certainly they compare favorably with Premier in total yield. Empire plants have not failed to make a crop in the years since 1950 when it was introduced. However it does not have the long record of frost resistance which Premier has demonstrated for so many years. Grower reaction to Empire has been enthusiastic. Fine reports have come from Virginia, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, North Carolina and other states. The only un- favorable report we have had on this variety came from one grower in Wis- consin. We are confident that this was due to some local condition rather than the adaptability of Empire for that area. As with Premier Empire territory covers the northern and middle states and as far south as the higher altitudes of North Carolina, Kentucky and Missouri. Empire was originated in New York by Dr. George L. Slate and released for intro- duction by the Geneva Station in 1950. From our own observation of it in Mary- 10. land and in New York state chiefly we would plant Empire in preference to Pre- mier except possibly for a processor market where total volume of
