Starbirth region NGC 346, Hubble Space Telescope image. This nebula is in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way that lies around 210,000 light years from Earth. This is the first time that very young stars have been identified in the SMC. The youngest stars here are only 5 million years old. Starbirth is rare in small galaxies like the SMC. This image was taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the HST in July 2004.
