The officers then ran for himbut he turned and ran and was never afterwardseen alive. Ed was fully identified as the man wanted,although he denied his identity. Brothers ofthe murdered men in Wisconsin accompaniedthe officers and positively id^tified him as theman who killed their brothers. He was takenback to Wisconsin, November 19, 1881, and. He was surrounded by amob of men who threw a rope around his neckand gtarted down stairs supposedly to hanghim to a tree. This was done but he was deadlong before he reached the tree, as he wasdragged down stairs at the end of the coroners jury viewed the body, examinedthe necessary witnesses and returned a verdictthat he came 10 his death by falling down thecourt house stairs, with which verdict thecourts were well satisfied. Ix)ns death was not so sensational but wflldid he pay for his misdeeds. He died in a in a western city, alone, vinattended, witha black past to view and a blacker future tocontem|)late.
