The injured Brigadier Lathbury hid in this house (135 Alexanderstraat) during Operation Market Garden. He was supporting Major-General Roy Urquhart heading towards the centre of Arnhem when he was hit and was left here as Urquhart moved on. Major-General Roy Urquhart was the most senior officer on the ground during the Allied Operation Market Garden invasion of southern Netherlands which started on 17th September 1944. He was trapped in the attic of 14 Zwarteweg for 30 hours until the early hours of 19th September. He made it back to the British 1st Airborne Division lines in Oosterbeek and led his defeated men across the Lower Rhine to safety a few days later.
