Kennan is a man of mediumheight, slender, and perfectly at easeupon the stage, giving out the impres-sion that he is addressing each one inhis audience personally. He gives a re-markably interesting account of his firstvisit to Siberia as a member of the firstexploring party of the Husso-AmericanTelegraph expedition, and tells of thewanderings of a party of Americans that-set sail from San Francisco in 1864, toarrange for a telegraph line betweenSan Francisco and St. Petersburg by theway of Siberia and Kamchatka. Thecamp life in Siberia lasted three years. f. i During this period they became thor-oughly familiar with the strange man-ners and customs of the Koraks andother native tribes. It is perhaps in hishappy descriptions of native mannersand customs that Mr. Kennan is at hisbest. Words never fail him, whetherhe would be witty, impressive, or merelymatter-of-fact. His descriptions, par-ticularly that of the aurora, are magni-ficent. The simplest narrative he makesinteresting, and when it is desirable hecan thrill his hearers without oratoricaleffort. f Subject: aAdventures irj /Krciic Asia.
