Astronomical chart showing Bootes the Ploughman holding a spear, a sickle, and two dogs, Asterion and Chara, on leash, also showing a quadrant, and the hair of Berenice forming the constellations. Bootes was one of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy and is now one of the 88 modern constellations defined by the International Astronomical Union. Canes Venatici is one of the 88 official modern constellations. It is a small northern constellation that was created by Johannes Hevelius in the 17th century. Its name is Latin for hunting dogs, and the constellation is often depicted in illustrations as representing the dogs of Bootes. Below them is Coma Berenices a traditional asterism that has since been defined as one of the 88 modern constellations. The name means, Berenice's Hair, and refers to the legend of Queen Berenice II of Egypt, who sacrificed her long hair. Above the head of Bootes is Quadrans Muralis a constellation created by Jérôme Lalande in 1795. It is no longer in use, but the Quadrantid meteor shower is named after it. Urania's Mirror is a boxed set of 32 constellation cards first published by Samuel Leigh of the Strand, London, in or shortly before 1825. An unidentified lady, referred to by her nom-de-plume, Jehoshaphat Aspin, designed these whimsical astronomy cards. The engraver was Sidney Hall.
