Number 29, Historic Electric Crane Detail at Bristol City Docks.

This historic electric crane was built in 1951 and rescued from the scrap metal dealers in the early 1970’s. They were an important part of Bristol docks enabling a rapid loading and off-loading of goods. There are four surviving ‘level luffing’ cranes out of an original forty two and they are located outside the City Museum. These were built by Stothert and Pitt of Bath and could carry up to three tons. They were able to travel along rails to ben aligned with a ship. Only one of the cranes is fully functional and is used as a ‘prop’ in both television and film.
