Heberden's node on fingers. A hand affected by osteoarthritis showing Heberden's nodes, a ring- like swelling near the fingertips. These nodes arise in the interphalangeal joints and are hard swellings formed by a lump of cartilage that covers the upper surface of the joint. Osteo- arthritis is a disease of joint cartilage, associated with secondary changes in underlying bone which may be painful and ultimately impair and deform the function of the affected joint. It occurs most commonly in the elderly, it may result from joint overuse, and may be inherited. Treat- ments include anti-inflammatory drugs or surgery in the most severe cases.
