Slow worm

Adult female slow worm (Anguis fragilis). Often mistaken for snakes, slow worms are legless lizards that are native to Europe and Asia. They typically favour hidden, humid conditions such as rough grassland and woodland edges. Usually males are greyish brown whereas females are brown with dark sides. Slow worms are known for their exceptionally long lives. Their average lifespan in the wild is 20 to 30 years. Photographed in April, in Dorset, UK.
