The attack, according to Pfeiffer, is suddenand the fever moderately high ; there is complaint of tenderness in the neck,and some of the cervical glands, usually those at |the posterior border of thesterno-mastoid, or the occipital glands, are swollen and tender. In a fewdays the temperature falls and the glands become normal. In a few instancesthe attack has been more severe and has lasted longer. In these cases no. The glands never suppurate. Pfeififer has noted several ofthese cases in one house at the same time, the disease being infectious orepidemic. We are, however, rather inclined to think that while gland fever doesundoubtedly take place, it is rarely idiopathic, but the result of absorption oftoxic materials from a mucous membrane. Gland fever often occurs mscarlet fever and other various forms of tonsillitis, the throat may beapparently well or hardly abnormal, yet the cervical glands are swollen andtender, and the patient feverish.
