This hydraulic machine depends on Pascal's law, which states that a change in pressure at any point in an enclosed fluid at rest is transmitted undiminished to all points in the fluid. Application of a small force to the small piston transmits pressure throughout the fluid to the large piston. At the large piston the pressure is exerted over a larger area, so the total force acting is multiplied. However, the larger piston moves a much shorter distance than the small piston. Pressure is calculated by dividing the force by the area over which it acts.
