Classic dancer on a wet day, leaf hand position, The Elephant Terrace, Angkor Thom, Cambodia

The 350m-long Terrace of Elephants was used as a giant reviewing stand for public ceremonies and served as a base for the king's grand audience hall. A Khmer classical dancer in the costume of a male Ngoh role (male roles are usually played by a female dancer), stands in a doorway on the Terrace of the Elephants. During the Khmer Rouge era (1975-79) 90% of Khmer classical performers were put to death. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, surviving artists revived the centuries old classical dancer tradition and it was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2003.
