Reconstruction of a dinosaur, Deinonychus. This was a genus of small (about 3 metres long) carnivores living in the upper cretaceous period about 100 million years before present. Deinonychus was very agile, and is thought to have hunted larger dinosaurs in packs, rather like modern hyenas. Two of these dinosaurs are depicted with a kill: fossil remains have shown several Deinonychus skeletons next to a large herbivore, Tenontosaurus. In addition to the large array of teeth, Deinonychus had very large, powerful claws. This reconstruction is based on fossil remains and is on display at the Palais de la Decouverte, Paris.
