Statue of Peeter van Coudenberghe at the botanical gardens in Antwerp, Belgium

Peeter van Coudenberghe (1525 - 1594) was a pharmacist and botanist from Antwerp. He was the owner of an herb garden outside the city wall that famous all around. By 1571 he had over 600 exotic plants in his garden. He could be regarded as the inventor of the orangery as he would let some plants hibernate in underground repositories during wintertime. Many botanists paid a visit to his garden. He was planning publishing his work, but the siege of Antwerp in 1584-1585, during which his gardens were destroyed, and the loss of his son during the war, prevented him from doing so.
