Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab)

Batavia, Illinois - The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), where scientists conduct basic research into the smallest building blocks of matter. In the underground MINOS cavern, an intense beam of neutrinos travels 450 miles through the earth to the Soudan mine in northern Minnesota. Scientists compare the results from neutrino detectors in both locations. The red wall is the near end of 980-ton Fermilab detector.
