It became nec-essary to strengthen the foundation. As the engine was installed in a brickengine house of very substantial construc-tion, it would have been very expensive toremove a portion of the wall so that apile driver could be taken inside and pilesdriven to reinforce the foundation. At thesuggestion of the Pacific Engineering Co.,Seattle, Wash., the plan was adopted ofsarrounding the old foundation with aconcrete footing carried on piers or pilesformed by sinking 8-in. well casing andfilling it with concrete. Six of these pileswere simk as shown by the sketch. Theoriginal foundation was first excavatedaround as shown and a hole 6 ft. deepwas dug where each pile was to go. The8-in. well casing was then set in the holeand jetted down, using a iVi-vn. pipe 18 and water supplied at 60 lbs. pressure by a pump. The
