Hewas,however, to pos-sess qualities which better proclaim nobility—adeeply reHgious spirit, a charity to which selfishnesswas painfully repugnant, a firmness of will tempered inhumble obedience, and a keenness and vigour of mindscrupulously dedicated to the cause of truth. Thesequalities distinguished Baronius as a peer in sanctityand scholarship among many saintly and learnedcontemporaries. He inherited his more vigoroustraits of character from his father, Camillo, a worldlyand ambitious man, whose strong will and tenacityof purpose were one day to clash with like qualities. Baronius received his early education fromhis intelligent parents and in the schools of nearbyVeroli.
