Hewas,however, to pos-sess qualities which better proclaim nobility—adeeply reHgious spirit, a charity to which selfishnesswas painfully repugnant, a firmness of will tempered inhumble obedience, and a keenness and vigour of mindscrupulously dedicated to the cause of truth. Thesequalities distinguished Baronius as a peer in sanctityand scholarship among many saintly and learnedcontemporaries. He inherited his more vigoroustraits of character from his father, Camillo, a worldlyand ambitious man, whose strong will and tenacityof purpose were one day to clash with like qualities.
