Preparing a cancer patient for stereotaxic radiotherapy on a linear accelerator. Modern radiotherapy techniques aim to accurately deliver a measured radiation dose at the target, which may be a very small intra-cranial tumour. In Stereotaxic Multi-Arc Radiotherapy (SMART), a number of low doses are delivered to the target from various positions around the body. In this manner the target (a tumour, for example) receives a cumulative, effective radiation dose, whilst surrounding healthy tissue is protected from radiation damage. The metal restraint & red laser beams are used to accurately align the patient's head & maintain this position during treatment.
