From 1765 to 1776 he lived in Boston, butnot finding himself in sympathy with the revolutionary move-ment, became an exile and retired to Halifax. This portraitwas painted about 1761 and remained at Brush Hill, nearMilton, until the death of James Murray Robbins, a grandsonof James Murray, which occurred in 1885. The portrait wasthen allotted to Mrs. J. P. Lesley, who in turn presented it toMr. Edward H. R. Lyman, the father of the present portrait is still in the possession of a canvas: H. 49^ inches; W. 39V2 inches.
