Glory and a Brocken spectre in fog. The photographer's shadow is cast in the centre. A glory is an optical phenomenon produced by the backscattering of light towards its source by a cloud of large water droplets. Backscattering is the combination of diffraction, reflection and refraction. A glory is seen in the direction opposite the sun. The photographer's shadow is called a Brocken spectre and is cast upon the upper surfaces of clouds when the sun is low in the sky. Photographed during a winter storm, near the Bright Angel Trail, South Rim, in the Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona, USA.
