Sir Richard Owen KCB FRS (1804-1892), English biologist, comparative anatomist, paleontologist, and opponent of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection.

This restored image of Sir Richard Owen FRS features the famous scientist in a seated portrait by W & D. Downey (Newcastle on Tyne, England) and dates to the late 1870s or early 1880s. Richard Owen was an English biologist, comparative anatomist and paleontologist who is probably most remembered for giving us the word dinosaur (dinosauria) and as an outspoken opponent of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection (though not an opponent of evolutionary concepts). Owen is also known for his efforts to give the natural specimens in the British Museum a new home, resulting in the establishment, in 1881, of the now world-famous Natural History Museum in London.
