The face side is usually polished, sothat if carefully inlaid it should need but little cleaning off. Where this isnecessary use a scraper, or a fine file, then rub down with flour paper,and finish with pumice powder and rottenstone. To prevent the pearl powderpenetrating the wood, first give it a rubber of light polish, which can be easilyremoved at the final clear off. It is often necessary to cut a line design intothe surface of pearl, which resists the engravers tool, and this is done bycovering the surface with a thin coat of beeswax brushed on warm. The designis then scratched through the wax down to the pearl, and nitric acid pouredinto the scratchings. In the course of an hour the acid will have burnt awaythe pearl, and after a good washi
