Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC attending the Sunday Remembrance parade at the National Memorial Arboretum in November 2011. As a Royal Marine with 40 Commando in Afghanistan in 2008, Matt threw himself on a booby-trapped grenade in an effort to save the lives of three comrades who were with him on a covert operation behind enemy lines at night. Later that year Matt, who grew up in Solihull, was awarded the George Cross, the highest British (and Commonwealth) medal for gallantry not in the face of the enemy.
