The fountain was produced at the Antoine Durenne foundry in Sommevoire, France and was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1862. It was then purchased by gunmaker Daniel Ross in 1862 for £2,000 and subsequently gifted to the city of Edinburgh. It was installed in current position in 1872. Some restoration work was completed in 2001, but water was turned off in 2008 Further restoration work started in July 2017 and on 8 July 2018 it was opened again and differently painted with a blue colour.
