The harbour gates at low tide, Charlestown, Cornwall, UK.

Charletown grew out of a small fishing village called West Polmear. In 1790, the population was about 9 fishermen and their families. In 1791, a local landowner, Charles Rashleigh developed plans with John Smeaton and began the construction of a port. Early in the 19th century, the port was used for exporting copper ore and, as the local mines became exhausted, this was replacedby china clay. Later, the port was taken over by Charlestown Estate. The harbour remained important for china clay export until the 1990´s when ship finally became too big to handle to tight entrance to the harbour. The harbour is now owned by Square Sail. Much of theit business involves using their ships and the harbour as film sets. Charlestown is one of the locations used for the BBC television production "Poldark".
