After graduation, he entered the East India trade, embarkingin business with the late Joseph Gardner. In 1858 heaccepted the presidency of the Boott ManufacturingCompany, with large cotton mills at Lowell. The com-pany was then in a weak financial condition, but beforehe left it, two years later, he had rebuilt the mill andestablished the business on a firm footing. In 1880 he gaveup most of his manufacturing interests and for a timewas president of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa FeRailroad while the company was making a struggle forexistence. He tided it over its worst period and thenresigned and spent a year in Europe. On his return heaccepted the presidency of the Oregon Railway & Navi-gation Company, which he held temporarily. He hasbeen identified with the Amory and the Dwight Manu-facturing companies,and has been directorin the Boston &Lowell, the Chicago,Burlington & Quincy,and other railroads,and in many bankingenterprises. has been aRepublican for aboutten years, but he hasnever been promi-nent in politics.
