Monkey Puzzle Tree (Araucaria araucana) growing in Crescent Gardens, Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire, UK

A restored Regency ornamental garden. In 1828, a 21-year old architect Thomas Ellis Owen designed a grand Crescent for a new development by the Solent, to be called ‘Angleseyville’. The accompanying ornamental garden, a acre strip fronting the whole sweep of the terrace, was laid out for the exclusive enjoyment of residents. But by the end of WW2, the Garden’s encircling iron railings had long gone, and all was overgrown, rubbish-filled and dreary. Restoration began in 1989, inspired by the Hampshire Gardens Trust and the Friends of Crescent Gardens, who have researched and restored this late Regency Garden, and lovingly maintain it. It is now an ornamental garden of considerable local historic interest highlighted by impressive restoration and creative planting.
