Before his Ascension, Jesus appears to his mother, the Virgin Mary, and to his female disciple, Mary Magdalene: details of a colourful 16th century Renaissance stained glass window in the village church at Ceffonds, in the Champagne region of northeast France, telling the story of the Resurrection.
Ceffonds, Haute-Marne, Grand Est, France: before his Ascension to Heaven, Jesus appears (l) to his mother, the Virgin Mary, and (r) to his disciple, Mary Magdalene, in panels of a colourful Renaissance stained glass window telling the biblical story of the Resurrection. The window was created by master glassmakers in Troyes, historic capital of the Champagne region, and installed in the village church, the Église Saint-Rémi de Ceffonds, in 1512, during rebuilding work lasting from 1510 to 1524. In the left panel, Saint Mary sits with arms outstretched as Jesus appears before her. In the right panel, Jesus warns Mary Magdalene "Noli Me Tangere" (Touch Me Not) as she kneels before him, holding a jar of incense. The windows at Ceffonds are typical examples of Champenoise School stained glass, made in the workshops at Troyes and elsewhere in the Champagne region. The city's glassmakers produced stained and painted Troyenne glass renowned for its intense blues, striking reds, vivid emerald greens and vibrant chrome yellows. Troyenne glass survives in many churches in the river valleys of the Aube, Marne, Upper Marne and Yonne. Apart from vivid colours, it can be identified by the inclusion of small narrative scenes and, as in this depiction of Mary Magdalene, halos with beaded decoration.
