NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter passing over the south polar region, computer artwork. The orbiter, which is planned to be launched in August 2005, will have multiple uses. As well as searching for suitable future landing sites, it will use radar to probe the internal structure of Mars' polar ice caps - collecting information about the geological structure and any liquid water which may be stored there. Phobos, one of Mars' moons, can be seen to the top left.
