Artificially-grown cartilage. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cartilage growing on synthetic fibres. This ground-breaking technique uses polyglycolide fibres (pink) as a template for cartilage growth. Fed by special nutrients, the cultured cells multiply to form cartilage tissue (orange). Once implanted the fibres safely break down, leaving only natural tissue. Replacement cartilage may be needed in the lining of joints and in various facial features. The use of the patient's own cells eliminates the risk of tissue rejection. Research conducted by teams at the University of Michigan, and in Boston, USA.
