Grey sky view brown masonry Alte National Galerie, with equestrian statue Fredrick William IV of Prussia, Museum Island, Berlin

The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie), in the style of a Greco-Roman Temple, opened in March 1876. Home to !9th Century paintings and sculptures, it was severely damaged in World War 2, being completely renovated and re-opened in 2001. The front entrance bears the gilded inscription 'To German Art, 1871', which refers to the year the German Empire was founded. A large equestrian statue of Frederick William IV of Prussia, dating to 1886, tops the large flight of steps at the entrance to the museum. Allegorical figures of Religion, Art, History and Philosophy, arranged around the pedestal, pay tribute to this patron of the arts and founder of the gallery.
