Itmust be said in their favour, however, that children aswell as aeed and infirm members of the tribe are well. Thematrimonial arrangement is frequently perfected bythe parents while the parties are children. As the female is eligible for marriage much earlier Appendix II 497 than the male, a girl may be appropriated by a manwhose wife has died, before her intended is old enoughto marry. This arrangement may continue, or herintended may claim her when he is old enough. Thisis largely a matter of mutual agreement. Young couples frequently change partners severaltimes in the first year or two, till both are suited,when the union is practically permanent, except fortemporary periods during which an exchange may beeffected with another man, or the wife loaned to afriend.
