The city of Segovia, capital of the province of the same name, lies north-west of Madrid in the shadow of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its aqueduct was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. One of the most significant and best-preserved Roman monuments in Spain, the aqueduct was built between the 1st and 2nd centuries and appears on the city's coat of arms.
