Water wheels. 16th-century illustration of a series of water wheels being used to raise water from a stream. This illustration is from 'Le Diverse et Artificiose Machine' (1588) by Italian engineer Agostino Ramelli (). This work contains nearly 200 designs for devices, many of them water-raising machines including water wheels, pumps, mills, fountains, and wells. This is an example of the use of a chain of buckets.
