Korea, A traditionasl artist at work in South Korea. Like many Asian scripts it can be written either vertically or horizontally. Horizontal writing is known as garesseugi or hoengseo, vertical is known as serosseugi or jongseo. Traditionally Chinese, Japanese and |Korean writing are written vertically in columns going from top to bottom and ordered from right to left with each new column starting to the left of the preceeding one. The stroke order and stroke direction (known as hamja or hangul in Korean) are all designed to facilitate writing in this the writer with a pen or brush in the right hand can continue unrolling the sheet with his left. Today vertical writing is very rare and most is done horizontally.
