The banished and fugitive prin-ces and nobles of France fermented trouble, andthe Republic at Paris found itself involved in mili-tary controversy with both branches of Germany(for Prussia was now the rival and peer of Austria).The conflict was waged in a somewhat sickly wayuntil Napoleon came to the front. In the Napoleonic war the battle of Austerlitzwas the especial humiliation of Austria, but it didnot stand alone. Marengos field was won by.
