In 1813 he attained the full rank of colo-nel, and in 1814 he married Jane, daughter ofRichard Campbell, Esq. of Craigie, Ayrshire, bywhom he had two sons, Thomas and the latter year he returned to Madras, at thehead of a commission of inquiry into the judicialadministration of our Eastern dominions, for whichhis vigorous and comprehensive understanding,his long and extensive experience, and his habitsof laborious research rendered him peculiarly qua-lified.
