This photograph of Commander Richard E Byrd was made aboard the whaler C A Larsen as it dropped anchor in the harbor at Wellington in New Zealand while on the way to the Antarctic early in 1929. The Byrd Expedition has a personnel of 64 men, with over 80 dogs, and is equipped with airplanes, radio apparatus, and every moern device. A base was established on the Bay of Whales in the Ross Sea.
