False-colour Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) of a mid-sagittal section through the head of a normal 42 year-old woman, showing structures of the brain, spine & facial tissues. Profiled features of the main part of the brain include the convoluted surface of the cerebral cortex (purple & gold) & the corpus callosum, the curved purple feature at the centre of the brain which is the band of nervous tissue that connects the two cerebral hemispheres. Beneath the corpus callosum are the pons & medulla, structures of the brainstem, which are continuous with the spinal cord. The cerebellum, the centre of balance & coordination, lies to the right of the brainstem.
