Looking towards the Cliff Railway from Saltburn Pier. The cliff railway dates from 1884 and operates on a water balanced system. Each lift car contains a water tank which is alternately filled and emptied as the cars go up and down, one car going down as the other comes up. The water pumping system is electrically powered.
