Fluorescence microscope. Female technician operates a binocular fluorescence microscope, a type of optical (light) microscope. She looks through two eyepieces while adjusting the focus of the magnified image she is examining. The image is of a specimen such as tissue or microorganisms. The magnifying lenses are silver (at centre). In fluorescence microscopy the specimen is stained with a fluorescent dye, and the dye is excited to glow using a scanning laser or ultraviolet light. Immunofluorescence light microscopy is another technique which uses antibodies to attach fluorescent dyes to tissues or structures in a cell which then glow.
