The plates are arranged as far as possible in chronologicalorder. Each plate will be found to be described at length withhistorical notes, precise measurements, press marks, and titles ordescriptions appended. Where possible, similar bindings both inthe Bodleian and elsewhere have been mentioned. Owing to the limitations attached to the photographic art, it wasfound to be impossible to procure satisfactory plates of severalimportant bindings, but descriptions of these will be found eitherin the
