ESCHERICHIA COLI, TEM

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is harbored naturally in the human gut, comprising 80% of the anerobic flora. This rod shaped bacteria has the characteristic shape of bacilli. In certain cases this bacteria may become pathogenic and cause urinary infection (cystitis), diarrhea, or in children, meningitis or coli is used for industrial production of hormones, particularly for gene engineering. This image was obtained by a negative staining method to show clear object on a dark background. This technique visualizes the bacterial pili (filamentous extensions protruding from the cell) which play an important role in bacterial adhesion to mucosal linings. Transmission electron microscopy, stained, x 32000.
